Frequently asked questions

Who is HANDFUL for?

HANDFUL was created for adults that are looking for a creative outlet or wish to reconnect to their creative potential. It’s for everyone who feels they left their creative outlet in childhood. For the thinkers that wish to let their thoughts behind and loose themselves in the process. For all the artists out there that seek inspiration in an organic material. For the digital nomads that forgot how nature feels like. For makers, artisan or designers that have ambitions to create their own products and objects. For anyone who is looking to enhance their own creativity. For entrepreneurs and team leads that understand, productivity grows with creativity. For anyone who is alive and wants to feel it again.

Offers especially designed for kids are currently not part of our program. If you want to talk to us about it, please write an Email to love@handfulceramics.com.

Where can I learn ceramics?

At our HANDFUL ceramics studio in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, run by artist Anke Buchmann, you'll find ceramics courses for beginners and advanced students. We also offer pottery wheel classes, open studio sessions three times a week, and memberships. A special highlight is the tactile clay meditation led by the founder, Anke Buchmann.

What's the difference between throwing and modelling?

Throwing is a craft that takes place on a potter's wheel and requires some practice to create functional vessels. Modeling is building by hand, where we freely shape the clay, sometimes with the help of tools. Here, you can quickly achieve success with or without prior experience. But throwing can also lead to beautiful ceramics if you practice with focus. Our open studio sessions are ideal for this.

Are there memberships for working at the ceramics studio?
... Yes, we offer three different memberships for beginners and advanced students. You can use the ceramics studio with or without a membership. You can find an overview of our studio memberships in our online shop.

What is Kurinuki?

Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese modeling technique in which clay is removed step by step using a loop tool. This method is often used in the production of tea bowls. You can learn this technique at HANDFUL's Chawan Workshop. Anke Buchmann incorporates the knowledge gained from her month-long study trip to Japan and will inspire you with her passion and extensive experience.

Can I give ceramics as a gift?

Yes. In our studio, you'll find handcrafted ceramics, vessels, stoneware, and sculptures. Depending on your budget, you can purchase smaller ceramic pieces, decorative objects, wall art, or ceramic sculptures. Gift certificates starting at €50 and workshop vouchers are also available in the studio.
